Program Description
This program offers a fast-paced introduction into the field of health care. In the first year, students learn lab skills, become proficient in vital signs and have the opportunity to earn CPR certification. In the second year, students learn skills to qualify them to take the Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) and National Certified Patient Care Technician (NCPCT) certification exams. The program uses a combination of lecture and lab to provide exposure to a wide variety of health career paths to help students decide if the health care field is a good fit for them.
Student learning outcomes include but are not limited to:
- Explain the necessity for critical thinking in a healthcare setting
- Given the list of medical abbreviations, root words, prefixes and suffices, construct medical words and give the meaning of medical abbreviations, spell and pronounce those medical terms correctly
- Using the five steps educational process provided, create a teaching plan to communicate information about selected health career programs
- Identify organizations that contribute to patient safety and overall healthcare quality with regard to regulations, standards and facility accreditation
- Complete and maintain OSHA standards and HIPAA guidelines as defined by the discipline
- Communicate (verbally and in writing) with patients, staff and instructors using relevant medical terminology for a nurse aide / patient care technician, and using industry specific documentation
- Based on patient contact, display knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to care for patients with conditions typically seen in the acute/long term care settings
- While in the lab and/or clinical setting, demonstrate safe, proficient performance of nursing assistant procedures
- Under the supervision of the nursing staff, per the care plan, provide routine patient care using principles of acute care nursing assistant procedures, while maintaining patient rights
- Use observations of patients to identify care, nutritional, safety and rehabilitative needs of individuals experiencing various disease processes, providing care in consideration of individual needs and diversity, following safety and infection control protocol
- Plan, prepare, and perform direct patient care, phlebotomy and EKG needs, with ability to recognize problems, troubleshoot appropriately and report accordingly
